Art and Design Task Force Weekly Meeting

REPRESENT PSU AND AMPLIFY YOUR VOICe!

We need leaders to call it what it is! This team is open to all level of artists and is a space to support local organizing efforts in PVD.

We host art builds for local events, create banners, deisgn murals, and brainstorm PSU merch! There’s no limit to our art projects, and we’d love for you to join us.

Current art project: PSU office wall mural: right now, we are designing murals for our office space! We have two murals in mind, one for our mental health room and another for our backs youth space downstairs. If you have any ideas, or would like to help us paint, stop by at our weekly meetings!

Well-Being Aid Task Force Meeting

We take care of each other.

Our Well-Being Aid (WBA) is a mutual aid program that supports Providence students' well-being through a mutual aid fund and other projects. During the meetings, students discuss different ways to support youth in Providence. This team also reviews applications to the WBA fund and runs local aid mutual aid projects, such as the annual Back to School Supply Drive. We also host events to increase awareness of the WBA fund, raise money for this program, and connect with other organizations and resources. Please join us if you are interested in creative ways to support Providence students' well-being!

No experience is needed to join, but please make sure to follow our community norms of respect, confidentiality, and solidarity.

Next meeting: Generally every other Tuesday from 3:30-4 PM. Please contact us for more information and a virtual meeting link.

Students Ignite Change: Shaping Our Schools Candidate Forum

You’re invited to Students Ignite Change: Shaping Our Schools Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 22 at the Providence Public Library’s Auditorium & Library! Link to RSVP is at the button below!

Do you have questions for school board candidates? Do you want to learn how to get involved in the political life of your city and school district? Students Ignite Change is a youth-driven candidate forum organized by a large coalition of organizations. The forum will provide an opportunity for youth and families to ask questions, learn about education policy, and get involved in the electoral process (even if you aren’t able to vote) through volunteer canvassing, poll working, and voter pre-registration. Nearly all of the School Board candidates will be present!

There will be free dinner, interpretation, and childcare! Thank you to the Providence Public Library for providing the space and to United Way of Rhode Island for sponsoring the event!

We’re excited to see you all there!

Participating organizations - the Providence Student Union, NAACP Providence Branch , United Way of RI , Brown Votes, OurSchoolsPVD , ARISE, Paremts Leading Educational Equity, and the RI Coalition of Black Women.

Columbus who? Youth Dance Workshop + Kiki Ball

Free youth community building event & workshop alert!

Join us to learn more about vogue, QTBIPOC Ballroom history and culture, how this is connected to our schools PVDs fight for ethnic studies in Providence Public Schools, and how YOU can get involved! There is no dance experience required – this is a space to explore your safety, queerness, gender (or anti-gender), allyship, curiosity, confidence, and artistry for all bodies.

This workshop will be straight into a Kiki were participants can freely showcase your moves, lewks, and energy! Come prepared to strut, Way, connect with the queer ancestors, and have a fabulous time.

Join PSU and Brown University Students for Educational Equity (S.E.E.) for our Fun Friday Block Party this Friday from 4 - 6:30 in our space and back parking lot! We'll have lots of live music from local artists, free pizza and refreshments, ping pong, spike ball, corn hole, Wii, and more! The music line-up includes The Bedside, Mr. Ocean State, Tye Knox, Rip Galiano, and J.O.E.

We are celebrating the launch of Fun Fridays and raising money for our Well-Being Aid fund in partnership with S.E.E. Thanks to Brown S.E.E. for sponsoring this event!

Decorate and create our own cultural plate while you enjoy free food from local providence BIPOC owned food spots with us! All Providence High School students are welcome to attend. This event will also include opportunities to get involved in the demand for Ethnic Studies Courses in our schools.

My Culture is NOT a costume (workshop)

How do you define culture? It may be natural to merge and blend cultures as people from different backgrounds come together and interact.

However, the line is drawn when a dominant cultural group makes use of elements of a non-dominant group in a way that the non-dominant group views as exploitative- join us to discuss cultural, cultural appropriation, and how YOU can ensure you are not participating in harmful appropriation this Halloween. This workshop is meant to be a space to learn and have open conversations.

This team also assists with reviewing applications to the WBF and runs local aid mutual aid events such as school supply drives, fundraising for other local organizations, and centering community over all.
